The City and Its Uncertain Walls Hardcover
$40.00STEP INTO THE CITY
When a young man’s girlfriend mysteriously vanishes, he sets his heart on finding the imaginary city where her true self lives. His search will lead him to take a job in a remote library with mysteries of its own.
When he finally makes it to the walled city, a shadowless place of horned beasts and willow trees, he finds his beloved working in a different library – a dream library. But she has no memory of their life together in the other world and, as the lines between reality and fantasy start to blur, he must decide what he’s willing to lose.
A love story, a quest, an ode to books and to the libraries that house them, The City and Its Uncertain Walls is a parable for these strange times.

Review
No other author mixes domestic, fantastic and esoteric elements into such weirdly bewitching shades. ― Financial Times
It’s safe to say that there’s no one like Murakami. ― Literary Review
Murakami is a master storyteller and he knows how to keep us hooked ― Sunday Times
Beguilingly enigmatic…Murakami blends science fiction, gothic novel, noir mystery, horror, and coming-of-age story… deftly weaves ordinary reality―“something you have to choose by yourself, out of several possible alternatives”―with a shadow world that is at once eerie and beautiful. Astonishing, puzzling, and hallucinatory as only Murakami can be, and one of his most satisfying tales. ― Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
Regular readers will delight in the Easter eggs nested in an unsettling quest spun from Murakami’s long-patented dream logic ― Observer
About the Author
In 1978, Haruki Murakami was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers’ award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, that turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon.
In works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Men Without Women, Murakami’s distinctive blend of the mysterious and the everyday, of melancholy and humour, continues to enchant readers, ensuring his place as one of the world’s most acclaimed and well-loved writers.
Philip Gabriel is the author of Mad Wives and Island Dreams: Shimao Toshio and the Margins of Japanese Literature and Spirit Matters: The Transcendent in Modern Japanese Literature and has translated many novels and short stories by the writer Haruki Murakami and other modern writers. He is recipient of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature (2001) for his translation of Senji Kuroi’s Life in the Cul-de-Sac, and the 2006 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for his translation of Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore.
The Collected Works of Atul Ga: The Checklist Manifesto + Better + Being Mortal + Complications Paperback
$43.00Combined box set of all the bestselling books by Atul Gawande, acclaimed surgeon and writer
In The Checklist Manifesto, Gawande finds a remedy to tackle immensely complex problems with the humblest of techniques: the checklist. Through riveting stories from the fields of medicine to disaster response, investment banking to skyscraper construction and businesses, he demonstrates how the checklist can help anyone improve their own and others’ lives.
In Being Mortal, Gawande argues that an acceptance of mortality must lie at the center of the way we treat the dying. Using his experiences (and missteps) as a surgeon, comparing attitudes toward aging and death in the West and in India, he provides an extraordinary account of loss. Questioning, profound and deeply moving, Being Mortal is a masterpiece.
In Better, Gawande’s gripping stories take us to battlefield surgical tents in Iraq, delivery rooms in Boston, a polio outbreak in India, and malpractice courtrooms in the US. He discusses the ethical dilemma of lethal injections, examines the influence of money on modern medicine, and recounts the contentious history of hand-washing. And as in all his writing, he gives us an inside look at his own life as a surgeon.
In Complications, Gawande performs surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science that is complicated, perplexing and profoundly human. Dramatic true stories explore how mistakes occur, why good surgeons go bad, and what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable. Product description

Journey through forests and realms with iconic characters About the Author
Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Carl Grimm (1786-1859) were born in Hanau, Hesse-Kassel, Holy Roman Empire (present-day Germany). After completing school, they joined the University of Marburg where they studied law. They also grew interested in folk poetry, philology, history, and began studying medieval German literature. In 1812, they published the first volume of their classic collection, with 86 folk tales, titled Kinder- und Hausmärchen (known as Children’s and Household Tales in English). Unlike the romantic, poetical fairy tales, these tales were as beautiful as they were violent and frightening, presenting life as it was. This volume was criticized as it was considered unsuitable for children. The second edition of Children’s and Household Tales, commonly known as Grimms’ Fairy Tales, had a total of 170 tales published in three volumes. In every successive edition, which was elaborately illustrated, stories were revised, added, and subtracted. The seventh edition published in 1850 had a total of 211 tales.
