Tawaifnama Paperback
$34.00Dharmman Bibi rode into battle during the revolt of 1857 shoulder to shoulder with her patron lover Babu Kunwar Singh. Sadabahar entranced even snakes and spirits with her music, but eventually gave her voice to Baba Court Shaheed. Her foster mothers Bullan and Kallan fought their malevolent brother and an unjust colonial law all the way to the Privy Council—and lost everything. Their great-granddaughter Teema paid for the family’s ruination with her childhood and her body. Bindo, Asghari, Phoolmani, Pyaari … there are so many stories in this family. And you—one of the best-known tawaifs of your times—remember the stories of your foremothers and your own. This is a history, a multi-generational chronicle of one family of well-known tawaifs with roots in Banaras and Bhabua. Through their stories and self-histories, Saba Dewan explores the nuances that conventional narratives have erased, papered over or wilfully rewritten. In a not-so-distant past, tawaifs played a crucial role in the social and cultural life of northern India. They were skilled singers and dancers, and also companions and lovers to men from the local elite. It is from the art practice of tawaifs that kathak evolved and the purab ang thumri singing of Banaras was born. At a time when women were denied access to the letters, tawaifs had a grounding in literature and politics, and their kothas were centres of cultural refinement. Yet, as affluent and powerful as they were, tawaifs were marked by the stigma of being women in the public gaze, accessible to all. In the colonial and nationalist discourse of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this stigma deepened into criminalisation and the violent dismantling of a community. Tawaifnama is the story of that process of change, a nuanced and powerful microhistory set against the sweep of Indian history.

The Bachchans: A Saga of Excellence Hardcover
$185.00The Bachchans – probably no other family in India has had the kind of hold on the Indian psyche as they have. The cultural landscape of India is incomplete without a mention of the Bachchans. And though Amitabh Bachchan is the most celebrated of them all, the Bachchan family’s engagement with India’s socio-cultural space starts well before him – in the early years of the twentieth century, with the birth of Harivansh Rai Bachchan – and continues into the third decade of the twenty-first, with the imminent film debut of Agastya Nanda.
S.M.M. Ausaja’s The Bachchans: A Saga of Excellence is a stunning visual chronicle of this history spanning over a hundred years. The author goes back in time to Allahabad in the early 1900s to document the life and times of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, his literary accomplishments with the publication of Madhushala, the tragic death of his first wife and his marriage to Teji (Sarojini Naidu introduced the couple to the Nehru family as ‘the poet and the poem’!), and the birth of their sons Amitabh and Ajitabh.
This pictorial biography then goes on to record the remarkable film careers of Amitabh Bachchan (arguably, the greatest star India has ever produced), his wife Jaya Bhaduri (who was a bigger star before her husband went through the stratosphere), and their son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai (who were among the biggest stars of the new millennium).
In The Bachchans, Ausaja, a sort of Boswell to Amitabh Bachchan, archiving all film-related memorabilia pertaining to the actor, offers the ultimate fanboy tribute to the family with a dazzling kaleidoscope of never-before-seen images – posters, stills and photographs – that are bound to thrill and mesmerize anybody interested in the story of a remarkable family.
Gorgeously designed and beautifully produced, this is not just a collector’s edition but also a visual history, like no other, of an important page of India’s popular culture. About the Author
