Sufi Rituals and Practices: Experiences from South Asia, 1200-1450 Hardcover
$75.00The book is an in-depth study of the lesser-explored history of Sufi practices in South Asia. Covering the formative period of Sufism in this region, the work studies practices like ‘sama’ (listening to poetry and music) and ‘zikr’ (remembrance of God) through the careers of the earliest Sufi orders in the region, ‘Chishti and Suhrawardi’. The book allows the reader critical insight into ‘Sufi exercises’, the meaning, structure, and performance of sama, the long debate on the legality of music, dance and poetry as religious practices, tensions between Sufis and the State around the permissibility of sama, zikr as a core Sufi exercise, the practice of sama and zikr across orders, and the importance of etiquette in Sufi communities. The work essentially understands spiritual practices as a critical element in the development of Sufism in South Asia. Moving beyond the limits of the north-south binary, the author also focuses on the Deccan, weaving a seamless narrative that reflects the contributions of generations of important Sufi masters. Shedding light on the private world of Sufi practices, the work, for the first time, introduces English language readers to a full-length translation of a treatise written in defence of listening to music and poetry as an integral spiritual exercise.
Svayambodha and Shatrubodha: Hindu View of Self and the World Hardcover
$29.00Svayambodha and Shatrubodha aims to build a foundational framework to help Hindus discover who they are and who they are not. The Hindu consciousness is built upon the wisdom to differentiate between dharma and adharma. As long as this viveka is alive, Hindu society thrives. A loss of this discriminating power leads to decay and degeneration. In the last few hundred years, especially in the post-independence era, this core Hindu aptitude to survive and thrive has been lost. As a result, the very fabric of Hindu society developed ruptures, leading to socio-political and civilizational decline. Great saints, thinkers, and leaders like Swami Vivekananda, Shri Aurobindo, Lokmanya Tilak, Veer Savarkar, Ram Swarup, and Sita Ram Goel started and continued the revival of the Hindu intellect. This book is a small attempt to take that intellectual Hindu renaissance forward by rekindling the viveka that is necessary to differentiate between dharma and adharma. The Svayambodha–Shatrubodha framework does this by making Hindus aware of their civilizational core on one hand and by sensitizing them about the civilizational threats that Sanatana Dharma and Hindu society face today.Product description

Tawaifnama Paperback
$34.00Dharmman Bibi rode into battle during the revolt of 1857 shoulder to shoulder with her patron lover Babu Kunwar Singh. Sadabahar entranced even snakes and spirits with her music, but eventually gave her voice to Baba Court Shaheed. Her foster mothers Bullan and Kallan fought their malevolent brother and an unjust colonial law all the way to the Privy Council—and lost everything. Their great-granddaughter Teema paid for the family’s ruination with her childhood and her body. Bindo, Asghari, Phoolmani, Pyaari … there are so many stories in this family. And you—one of the best-known tawaifs of your times—remember the stories of your foremothers and your own. This is a history, a multi-generational chronicle of one family of well-known tawaifs with roots in Banaras and Bhabua. Through their stories and self-histories, Saba Dewan explores the nuances that conventional narratives have erased, papered over or wilfully rewritten. In a not-so-distant past, tawaifs played a crucial role in the social and cultural life of northern India. They were skilled singers and dancers, and also companions and lovers to men from the local elite. It is from the art practice of tawaifs that kathak evolved and the purab ang thumri singing of Banaras was born. At a time when women were denied access to the letters, tawaifs had a grounding in literature and politics, and their kothas were centres of cultural refinement. Yet, as affluent and powerful as they were, tawaifs were marked by the stigma of being women in the public gaze, accessible to all. In the colonial and nationalist discourse of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this stigma deepened into criminalisation and the violent dismantling of a community. Tawaifnama is the story of that process of change, a nuanced and powerful microhistory set against the sweep of Indian history.
