Shiva Hardcover Book Dorling Kindersley & Nilima Chitgopekar

Original price was: $21.85.Current price is: $20.76.

He is Mahadeva, supreme and serene. He is Bhairava, full of wrath, annihilating all that is in his path. He is Mahakaal, encompassing time and eternity, a symbol of the end. He is the androgynous Ardhanarishvara, representing the balance of opposites. He is the lord of dance and protector of animals, he is a teacher and healer, the destroyer, but also the creator. He is a husband, a lover, a poet, and a warrior. He is the infinite Shiva, divine, yet human.

Shiva: God of Gods explores the many dimensions of Shiva and Shaivism, unpacking the history, mythology, folklore, and philosophy behind a deity whose paradoxes have long captivated both scholars and devotees. Moving beyond traditional religious study, the book offers a nuanced look at the theological and cultural currents that have shaped his presence across millennia. It also traces how Shiva has influenced – and been influenced by – those who worship him, inviting both the believer and the sceptic to encounter him not as a fixed figure, but as a living, evolving idea. Dr Nilima Chitgopekar’s uniquely expressive voice animates these histories and ideas, bringing these strands together into a narrative that is as compelling as it is insightful.

Shiva blends rare visual culture – classical paintings, modern artworks, artefacts, and photographs from sacred sites and festivals – with an evocative narrative, all of which seeks to illustrate the universality of Shiva and his philosophy, making it an ideal book for mythology and theology enthusiasts, followers of the Hindu faith and Shaivism, and those interested in Indian culture.

About the Author

Source Code: My Beginnings Hardcover Bill Gates

Original price was: $16.38.Current price is: $14.21.

Bill Gates is one of the most transformative figures of our age. In Source Code he takes us back to his beginnings.

He describes with candour his childhood in Seattle, the centrality of family – his close relationship with his card-playing grandmother and his demanding but caring parents – his struggles to fit in, his rebelliousness, his first deep friendships and the impact of losing his closest friend.

We see Gates’s extraordinary mind developing, the restless teenager who discovered a love of coding and computing at the dawn of a new era and felt that ‘by applying my brain, I could solve even the world’s most complex mysteries’. We see the earliest signs of his phenomenal business acumen, which led him to drop out of Harvard at the age of 20 to devote all his energies to Microsoft, the company he started with his childhood friend Paul Allen. He writes about his first involvement with three Steves – Jobs, Wozniak and Ballmer – who would play a crucial role in so much that followed.

The book ends in the late 1970s when Microsoft, still with only a dozen employees, signed its first deal with Apple. The deals would go on and Microsoft would grow unimaginably. Yet Gates never forgot his mother’s reminder that he was merely a steward of any wealth that he gained. This warm and inspiring book, Bill Gates’ origin story, allows readers to understand his energy and ambition – and to see how he sets himself in the world.

Sufi Rituals and Practices: Experiences from South Asia, 1200-1450 Hardcover

$75.00

The book is an in-depth study of the lesser-explored history of Sufi practices in South Asia. Covering the formative period of Sufism in this region, the work studies practices like ‘sama’ (listening to poetry and music) and ‘zikr’ (remembrance of God) through the careers of the earliest Sufi orders in the region, ‘Chishti and Suhrawardi’. The book allows the reader critical insight into ‘Sufi exercises’, the meaning, structure, and performance of sama, the long debate on the legality of music, dance and poetry as religious practices, tensions between Sufis and the State around the permissibility of sama, zikr as a core Sufi exercise, the practice of sama and zikr across orders, and the importance of etiquette in Sufi communities. The work essentially understands spiritual practices as a critical element in the development of Sufism in South Asia. Moving beyond the limits of the north-south binary, the author also focuses on the Deccan, weaving a seamless narrative that reflects the contributions of generations of important Sufi masters. Shedding light on the private world of Sufi practices, the work, for the first time, introduces English language readers to a full-length translation of a treatise written in defence of listening to music and poetry as an integral spiritual exercise.
